Final Essays

Know Your Meme
For this project our group decided to look into the history of the dancing soldier through the "lady gaga" telephone video remake.

Along with the ISTE standards, I feel that this project most definitely demonstrated creativity and innovation. For this project we had to put in our own opinions of a certain meme, and show it in a creative way. This project also allowed us to communicate with the internet world about a certain meme, and allowed us to collaborate with our group members. IN order to successfully complete this project we also had to research the origins of the dancing soldier in video's, which we were able to trace all the way back to the 1940's. As for thinking critically to use information, our group had to use the "power of our minds" to come up with an interesting way to portray the information in our meme. Lastly, we used technology appropriately in order to film this project as well as edit it. We used both imovie and the macbook pro to do this.

I will continue to meet these standards by using imovie in my other classes as well as using this technology in the classroom.

 Podcast

For this podcast project we chose to discuss the sidewalks in west chester because we have each had difficulties with these walk ways.

This project allowed us to show creativity through our use of interviews. It also allowed us to communicate with people across the campus in order to complete our interviews. Also we collaborated with our group to make sure that this project was complete. Although we would have liked to do some more research on our topic, we actually did not do too much research because not much was needed. This project also caused us to think critically and solve problems. None of our group members had ever used garage band before, so we had trouble with the technology at first. After some time we were able to figure things out through. Lastly we used technology productively by completing this project on the macbook pro.

Although this was an extremely interesting project, it would be difficult to use in the classroom just because it is fairly difficult to put together. Also I will most likely not use this for another class just because there are not many opportunities to use a podcast.

 Multimodal

For this project I chose to write about the poem "The lost poem" by dr. seuss. I chose this poem because I have always truly enjoyed it, and I feel that other people would enjoy it as well.

This project demonstrates creativity because multimodal projects are designed to show the creators own creativity. This project showed also how to communicate and collaborate effectively with professors. I conducted research for this project to find all of the pictures and information for this project. Through this project I thought critically, and solved problems. I had an interesting time using prezi, but after getting used to it, I didnt have too much trouble. Lastly I used technology effectively by creating a pretty interesting prezi project.

I definitely plan on using prezi for some of my other classes. It is a great way to show a presentation without having to use the normal power point.

OOPS- Analysis

So for the multimodal project  I had completely forgot that we needed to post an analysis up on our blogs, so here we go:

Because the text that I am choosing to use is a shorter poem, the imagery and symbolism is not in excess. However, this poem can be deeply dissected through Murray's many ideas and definitions. The poem that I have chosen is a short comedic poem by Dr. Seuss. I have chosen this poem because it is one of my favorites, and although it is a bit scattered, it most definitely tells a story. The story within the poem is that there is a man who works at a law firm and either loves his job or is being extremely sarcastic about how much he loves his job. Throughout the story the man says exactly why he loves his job, and at the end a few men in lab coats come to take him away. These men are in white coats which hints to the fact that the men are from a psychiatric center. This then implies that the man does not actually love his job, and that his job has made him go crazy.

This poem is a humorous way of showing that most people do not love their jobs. In fact, a good number of people in the world do not like the career that they have, so this poem provides a bit of comic relief for that. Also this poem uses Dr. Seuss's typical rhyming style, as well as his typical made up words. Because Dr. Seuss was so well known for writing children's books, this poem reminds the reader of what it was like to be a child and not have so many worry's. The fact that Dr. Seuss was writing to an older audience is also very interesting to the reader because of the fact that he was so well known for writing children's stories.

As for what Murray would have to say about this, he would most likely compare the poem to his five values of multi modality. The five values include image, unity, layering, juxtaposition, and perspective. The first value, image is very apparent within this poem because it paints a very vivid picture of what the person's life is like. The poem shows the reader an image of a very unhappy working class person stuck in the same routine day in and day out. As for unity, the poem display's unity through its use of repetition and rhyme scheme.

There is also quite a bit of layering throughout the poem. Layering is the use of tensions and resolutions within a piece of literature. In this poem the tensions are that of the man and his employers as well as his job. Although their is no positive resolution at the end of the poem, their is a resolution and that is of the man being taken away to a psychiatric ward. The next value is that of juxtaposition which is a collage or an altering of scale. This is seen throughout the poem because Dr. Seuss makes sure to jump around from one topic to another within the poem. Because of this there is a sense of an altering scale.

Lastly is the value of perspective. This value is the angle at which something is viewed. In the poem "I love my job", the reader sees the world through the narrator's eyes and sees how much he actually dislikes his job. The poem then is in the perspective of the man (narrator).

Through all of these values it can be seen that Murray would have quite an amount to say about this poem even though it is fairly short. Also it can be said that this poem has a non-discursive aspect within it even though it was designed as a discursive piece.

The first stanza of this poem repeats how the narrator loves his poem oh so much. The author makes use of repetition to emphasize how much he absolutely loves his job. The narrator also uses internal and end rhyme to make the poem flow. Also within this stanza the narrator describes the hierarchy in his work place, and emphasizes how he is in fact at the bottom of the corporate food chain. This stanza gives the reader an idea of how the narrator truly feels about his job.

The second stanza of this poem is a bit longer, and for good reason. This stanza gives some more detail about the narrators job, and although the narrator says he loves the different aspects of the job, any reader can tell that his job is not the best. The humorous part of this stanza is that any "office drone" knows exactly what the author is talking about in the poem when he talks about computers and office mates. One of the most important lines within this stanza is the point where he says "I love their leers and jeers and sneers"- this part of the poem not only uses a great rhyme scheme but the author uses made up words to make a point. These made up words are also symbolism of how the narrator is in fact going crazy.

In the final stanza of this poem the narrator says how happy he is to be at work, but at this point in the poem the reader can tell that the narrator has been sarcastic about his job the entire time. At the end of this stanza we find out that the narrator is in fact crazy and that people from a psychiatric ward are coming to take him away. An important quotation from this stanza is "the happiest slave of the firm." This shows just how the narrator truly feels, and shows how taken advantage of he actually is. A slave refers to someone who is forced into working, and this narrator feels trapped in his usual life routine.

Although fairly clear, this poem is a satire about corporate jobs and how much people in these jobs hate what they are doing. This poem is also a metaphor for our daily lives and how bored we can get with them.

Response to This American Life

For this assignment I chose to listen to This American Life episode number 428: Oh You Shouldn’t Have. Although informative, I do have to say that this episode was very dry and did not keep my attention for very long.
This specific podcast was about the act of giving in America, and if sometimes giving is a bad thing. The first subject that was brought up was about a talk show that had been on television some time ago. In this show the host would give people things, or introduce them to people that they haven’t seen in awhile. The one example that the talk show host used was that of a woman who had been in a Nazi work camp in Germany. This woman had met a girl while she was in this camp and on the show was reintroduced to the girl she hadn’t seen since she was in the camp. The talk show host brings up the fact that this gift may have been a bit too much because it brought back the woman to a place where she most likely wouldn’t have wanted to be.
In the next part of the segment the talk show host speaks of an incident that happened in Israel. A woman went into a medical marijuana center and begged repeatedly for the people who worked there to give her more because she was in so much pain. Finally one of the girls that worked at the center gave this woman some more, but it turns out that the woman was an undercover police officer. Here the talk show host asks the listeners if this makes any sense. The girl that worked at the center was just trying to help someone who was supposedly in pain, and she gets arrested for this.
The whole idea behind this radio segment is to elicit a response from the listener. It is also to inform the listener of things that are going on in the area as well as in the world. I believe that this particular episode was very dry because the girl who was hosting the show was just a fill in for the normal talk show host. Because of this, I feel that this episode wasn’t as interesting as it could have been.

Meme project difficulties

So all today I have been working on editing footage for our meme video project, and every time I solve one problem I realize that I have about ten more problems. I am currently trying to figure out how to fade one scene into another. I also have no idea how to add a page with text before the video starts, as well as credits at the end. Anyone know how to do these things???

Meme assessment

For the meme assessment portion of our homework I chose to assess the video that know your meme created about "Antoine Dodson". I chose this video because it is one that I thoroughly enjoy, and I wanted to see how the people of know your meme would go about dissecting this meme.

Perspective:
The perspective of the video shows that the way it was shot serves a purpose. The video is shot as if it were an instructional guide, when in fact it is giving information like an instructional guide. The point of view of this video is professional, thus making the video even more like an instructional guide to "know your meme". The overall perspective is fairly good, but the only thing it is missing from our rubric is the type and number of angle shifts. I was fairly unimpressed when I found the video to be mostly shots of the actress talking about the meme.

Juxtaposition:
This video does an excellent job of juxtaposition in that the video shows comparisons of new videos to the original Antoine Dodson video. The use of Basil Marceaux was a great example to show how truly funny the Antoine Dodson video was. Also the music remixes of Dodson's plea showed a great sense of juxtaposition.

Layering:
The use of many different renditions of the Antoine Dodson song shows how great of a job was done with layering. The many different versions were shown in part throughout the video, giving the audience the sense that the original video was very popular. Also this layering is humerus in that some of the renditions of the Antoine Dodson song were quite interesting.

Unity:
Although the Basil Marceaux video showed how funny Antoine Dodson was and how un-funny Marceaux was, this video was pretty much pointless. It was dropped into the middle of the video and seemed extremely out of place. While watching the video for the first time I was very confused as to why the people at know your meme were showing this seemingly random video. I would have to say for this specific meme, the people at know your meme did a terrible job of displaying video unity.

Overall Assessment:
I would give this video a C+. The know your meme people are great at what they do, and very funny, but I was just not impressed with their portrayal of this specific meme. I really wish they had taken a different route to dissect the meme because the original video was very humerus.

Autobiography

Hello, and welcome to my blogger page. This is my very first time using a blog so bear with me as I get used to how to work this thing. But as for me, I am a junior at West Chester University where I am studying English Education at the secondary level. I am also trying to work on getting certified as a math teacher for middle school.

I absolutely love West Chester, but I was not always a West Chester University student; I transferred from the University of Pittsburgh at the beginning of my junior year. I loved PITT but they did not have a secondary education program so I was forced to transfer to a school that had my major.

Both at PITT and West Chester I have been a member of Phi Sigma Pi honors fraternity. I have met some of my best friends through this fraternity, and I try to stay as active in it as possible. At PITT I was also an advisor for the Resident Student Association as well as an RA for Holland Hall. I was highly involved at PITT and am very proud of all of my accomplishments there.

Besides being in Phi Sigma Pi, I also have a job with Concord Wings inc. I am a waitress with the company and I absolutely love my job. In what spare time I have, I love to dance. I was a ballet dancer for 15 years and absolutely loved it. I had to give dancing up to make time for my studies, but I still try to get a few exercises in here and there.
